Sometimes it just hard to let go of certain things in your closet. But as I told my sister, whose youngest is now seven, it’s time to get rid of your maternity wear. Why? Well, because it’s been seven years, and two, you’re not really wearing it, let’s be honest. And if you are, well, let’s talk.
The first step to get your closet in the shape you want it, is to remove everything. Yeah, you might want to have a day to yourself to do this. Don’t be scared to pull everything out – it allows you to see your entire closet in a fresh light.
And if you don’t want to take everything out, then start with certain sections. It can be your shirts, pants, dresses, etc. If you know you’re going to wear it, put it back in your closet. Take the opportunity to really go through your clothes to see what you’re going to wear. Stuck on a certain item? Put it to the side and wait to see if you have anything you might be able to pair it with in another section of your closet.
When is it time to purge? Three tips:
- When it doesn’t fit. We can all say, I have goals to fit in this, but honestly, that item could be either out of style or doesn’t fit you well. Your shape may have changed or you have a new shape to show off. Let it go, Elsa style.
- When it’s a little run down. Does it have holes in it? Does it look faded (and not on purpose)? Is it supposed to be a v-neck but may look more like an oval-ish neck? It won’t be flattering if it isn’t in good shape. Let it go.
- It’s been in your closet for longer than one year and you’ve yet to wear it. Even better, if it still has tags on it. Let it go. It’s taking up room in your closet, and you can’t find an actual reason to wear it or probably won’t wear it in the future.
If you’re still not ready to purge, put it in your closet where you can see it. Don’t stuff it anywhere, put it out and in the open. If you still haven’t worn that item in six months, say it with me, let it go.
One way to see if you’re going to wear your it, if it’s hanging, put the hanger backwards. When you wear the item, turn the hanger around. Congratulations, you may keep this item! And now it feels like you have something new to wear.
So remember when it’s time to purge: fit, run down, or you have to dust it off.
