Basics: tees and tanks

What is your one go-to item in your closet, currently? Jeans? A favorite top? A cute shoe? Leggings? Okay, you can probably guess that my go-to item is a pair of leggings. But if I had a back up, it’s my tees and tanks. As I’m currently writing this, I’m wearing that exact outfit.

I’ll spare you a photo as I am also make-up free, hair a hot-mess, and in my glasses (thank you pink eye). However, leggings and a tee are generally my go-to outfits when I’m working from home or hanging with my kiddos. I feel a little more put together when I’m wearing a t-shirt than just a workout tank, and can easily put on a jacket if needed or switch to jeans if we are headed out to dinner or an errand that may not be legging appropriate.

My current t-shirt crushes are ones from Madewell or by Lush from Nordstrom. They aren’t super heavy, can hold up well and have great basic colors along with some fun stripes.

I’ve also had great luck with J.Crew tees – and even better news, J.Crew Factory is having a sale right now! Use code GETSET for 30% off your order of $100 or more. Stock up now! These tees will last you through the summer and into the fall!

If you’re looking for some tanks – I have found some great ones via Old Navy. These are my new favorites because you can wear a normal bra with them (thank you very much) and they aren’t see through. Occasionally you’ll get cute tank but all you see is bra. No thanks. They are thick enough to feel covered, but you won’t be sweating because they’re too heavy.

I just grabbed these tanks in three colors, black and white (shocker) and then a cream striped – I went out of my basics box. I’ve already worn a couple of them and love the circle hem line. It’s easy for a cute front tuck with jeans or cute to hang loose over your jeans and shorts.

Every girl needs at least three basic colors of tees in your closet. Black, white, and gray are easily layered, dressed up, dressed down, and will literally go with everything you own. And if you already have your basics, feel free to get a tee with a little detail, a ruffle detail, a peplum, or a tie.

Dressing up for work? Throw on a blazer, pencil skirt, and statement necklace.

Going out for drinks? Front tuck that bad boy, wear some statement earrings, and wear it with a wedge. Shorts or jeans are perfect for either look.

Hanging at the park? Hello leggings. Wear your favorite sneakers or sandals and grab a jacket if needed.

If you already have the three basic colors in your closet, it’s time to get crazy. Yep – go for stripes or a fun print. And can you mix prints? Absolutely! Wear your stripes with a camo jacket!

So if you’re going through your closet these days and trying to remember what to keep, what to purge, what to add, get your basic tees and tanks up front and build your outfit from there. And if you’re on the hunt, here are some of my favorites that I’ve hunted down. Just remember, if you keep buying a cheap tee and hate the way it fits or don’t like the way it washes, it’s time to invest. Spend a bit more for a shirt that will last you longer than a month – it will be worth it!

Happy shopping!
